Elon Musk’s Starlink Goes Live in Vietnam With Satellite Internet

SpaceX launches Starlink from $43 a month, expanding Vietnam’s connectivity to remote areas, islands, ships and backup networks.

Vietnam has officially joined Elon Musk’s global Starlink network, giving businesses and consumers access to satellite broadband across one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital economies. SpaceX’s Starlink service switched its Vietnam coverage status to “Available now” on August 13, opened a Vietnamese-language ordering platform and began accepting customers, marking a significant expansion of the country’s internet infrastructure beyond traditional fiber and mobile networks.

Starlink is offering two residential plans in Vietnam. The entry-level plan, with speeds of up to 100 Mbps, costs VND1.13 million (roughly $43) per month, while the higher-speed residential package costs about VND1.71 million ($65). Business customers can choose usage-based plans.

The service requires dedicated Starlink hardware, making the initial investment considerably higher than conventional Vietnamese broadband. The compact Starlink Mini costs about VND8.66 million, while the larger Standard 4 X system costs approximately VND10.27 million. That puts the minimum upfront cost of getting connected at close to VND10 million once the first subscription and related expenses are included.

Starlink says customers in Vietnam can order without a long-term contract, receive a 30-day trial period and expect equipment delivery within one to two weeks. Users must provide identification when registering. The company has also advertised potential connection speeds exceeding 340 Mbps, although actual performance can vary depending on location, network capacity and other conditions.

The economics mean Starlink is unlikely to immediately challenge Vietnam’s inexpensive fiber and 4G/5G services in major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Instead, its biggest impact could come where terrestrial networks are weakest: remote communities, mountainous regions, islands, offshore operations, ships and aircraft.

That distinction matters for international companies operating in Vietnam. Satellite connectivity can provide redundancy for factories, logistics networks, energy projects and other businesses where losing internet access can disrupt operations. Vietnamese authorities have also highlighted Starlink’s potential as a backup communications network when terrestrial infrastructure is damaged during typhoons, floods and other natural disasters.

Starlink uses a constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites to connect customer terminals to the internet. Compared with traditional geostationary satellite services, the much lower orbital altitude can substantially reduce latency, making satellite broadband practical for a wider range of everyday and commercial applications.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology licensed Starlink to provide satellite telecommunications services in February. The initial deployment permits four gateway stations and as many as 600,000 user terminals, giving SpaceX substantial room to expand if demand develops.

For Vietnam, the arrival of Starlink is about more than another consumer internet provider. The country has been investing heavily in digital infrastructure as it seeks to move further into higher-value manufacturing, technology and the digital economy. Satellite broadband adds another layer to that infrastructure, particularly in locations where building fiber or dense mobile networks is technically difficult or economically unattractive.

Price, however, remains Starlink’s biggest obstacle. Vietnam already has affordable and widely available terrestrial broadband, often offering higher theoretical speeds at a fraction of Starlink’s total cost. A VnExpress survey of about 8,500 respondents earlier this year found that 74% did not plan to use Starlink because existing terrestrial telecommunications services already met their needs. Only 15% expressed demand, while another 11% were considering the service.

That may ultimately reveal Starlink’s real opportunity in Vietnam. Its success does not necessarily depend on replacing fiber connections in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. The larger strategic value lies in connecting places conventional networks struggle to reach—and providing a second communications layer when those networks fail.

As Vietnam deepens its integration into global manufacturing, logistics and the digital economy, reliable connectivity increasingly becomes economic infrastructure rather than simply a consumer utility. The more important question may therefore be not how many urban households switch to Starlink, but how much economic activity satellite internet can unlock beyond the reach of Vietnam’s existing networks.
