Social media is buzzing over the story of a foreign tourist who recovered a pair of forgotten shoes on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, thanks to the help of a local scrap collector. The foreign tourist shares his heartwarming experience of finding his lost shoes with the help of a local scrap collector, drawing massive online attention.

The traveler behind the video is Joe Brady, a British content creator based in Thailand. Although he posted the clip on his personal Instagram over a month ago, it recently went viral again, amassing over 906,000 views.

In his caption, Brady wrote: “She didn’t speak a single word of English. No Google Translate. Nothing. She had no reason to help me and she still wouldn’t give up. Wait for the end.”

Brady explained that he had been filming a quick “fit check” video in an alleyway while wearing a new pair of Vans. After filming, he packed his old shoes—which he had only worn for a few weeks—into a box and left, completely forgetting to take them along.

By the time he remembered and rushed back, the box had vanished. As he stood wondering what to do, a scrap collector walked by pushing her cart. One spoke English, the other spoke Vietnamese, yet she quickly realized he was searching for a forgotten item.

Without hesitation, she waved for him to follow. While pushing her cart loaded with cardboard, she made continuous phone calls to her fellow collectors to ask if anyone had spotted the box.

She makes calls and searches everywhere to track down the tourist’s missing shoes.

Brady tried typing into ChatGPT on his phone to communicate, showing her the screen, but she waved it off and kept moving. To her, tracking down the missing shoes was the sole priority.

The search took several hilarious and unpredictable turns. She questioned other collectors in the area. At one point, a minor argument broke out when another vendor thought she was accusing them of taking the box, though it quickly turned out to be a harmless misunderstanding.

Despite the language barrier, she refused to give up. The pair crossed multiple streets and narrow alleys, inquiring with person after person.

After roughly 40 minutes, the unexpected happened: they actually found the shoes.

Against all odds, the two successfully locate the missing pair of shoes after a 40-minute search.

At the end of the video, Brady remained in utter disbelief. He attempted to offer cash to show his gratitude, placing bills in her hand, but she firmly waved them away.

“I tried to give her money, I really did, but she refused and wouldn’t accept anything. She just spent half an hour helping me. Vietnam is truly an incredible country,” he shared.

The story sparked widespread admiration online. Viewers were not only amazed by the recovery of the shoes, but also moved by how the local scrap collectors banded together to assist. With almost no initial clues and zero shared language, they mobilized their network and tracked the item across the district.

Social media users left enthusiastic reactions:

  • “Even I’m stunned, let alone him! How is she this incredible?”

  • “Watching this, I still can’t figure out how she found them without understanding a word he said, yet remained completely dedicated. 10/10 for her!”

  • “Every second of this video is jaw-dropping. Talk about having a solid network!”

  • “This brings such a smile to my face. What an extraordinarily kind woman.”
