Ca Mau: Dog meat shop owner died of rabies

On February 12, the Ca Mau Provincial Center for Disease Control received a report from the Infectious Disease Reporting System regarding deaths caused by rabies. They then coordinated with the Thoi Binh District Medical Center to investigate the case and implement necessary preventive measures. The deceased was a male born in 1967 and owned a dog shop in Nha May B hamlet, Tan Phu commune, Thoi Binh district, Ca Mau province.

Five months ago, the owner of a dog meat shop in Tan Phu commune, Thoi Binh district, Ca Mau province was bitten by a dog but did not receive a rabies vaccine. On February 8, the patient showed symptoms of fatigue, fever, and tremors. The patient self-medicated, but there was no relief. On February 10, the patient’s condition worsened, and the family took him to Ca Mau General Hospital for examination and hospitalization, where he was diagnosed with rabies.

At around 4:00 p.m. on February 11, the family requested to transfer the patient to a higher-level hospital. The patient was admitted to Military Hospital 175 in Ho Chi Minh City at 10:00 p.m. on the same day. However, the patient was again diagnosed with rabies at the City Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City after being transferred from Military Hospital 175 at 24:45 on February 11.

The hospital explained the patient’s condition to the family, who then requested to take the patient home. Unfortunately, the patient passed away at 1:40 p.m. on February 12 at home.
